About the Project
Canavezes Hot Springs: A Historical Gem with Roman Origins
The Canavezes hot springs have been known for their therapeutic benefits for centuries, with historical records suggesting that they existed prior to the founding of the country. According to Pinho Leal, these natural medicinal waters flowed between rocks in ancient times, and were even used by the Romans for bathing.
In fact, the Romans discovered these thermal waters as early as 110 A.D. during the reign of Emperor Trajan, and named them “Aquae Tamacanae” due to their proximity to the Tâmega River, which flows through the region.
The healing properties of these waters led the Romans to develop hot spring baths, which soon became so popular that a bridge and a Roman road were built across the Tâmega River to facilitate patient transport.
In the early 20th century, the thermal facilities were further improved, leading to the construction of the grand Hotel Palácio das Caldas de Canavezes.
Today, the Canavezes hot springs and Hotel Palácio are considered national treasures, with a rich history and cultural significance that continues to be cherished by older generations. Don’t miss the chance to experience the rejuvenating power of these ancient hot springs for yourself!
